Contextual Record - Market Report

The Threat of computer tablets

At the start of 2012 it was studied that consumers used laptops and desktops-pc three times more than computer tablets, but now the market for tablets has shot up and only 4% behind laptops and desktop-pc’s.

We will be comparing the market value and usage on laptops and desktop-pc against computer tablets to see which of these consumers prefer the most. We will have drawn our market research from the online store Amazon and from the retail store Curry’s/PC World; here we will evaluate the amount sold but also look at buyer’s reviews and opinions to gather an overall review.
What consumers purchased, what they liked and disliked about the product, the positive and negative aspects of the product and whether or not they would recommend these product to other consumers.

Here you can see the massive increase in demand for tablets. It was researched 16 plus desires a tablet but mainly for entertainment, recently McDonald’s have installed tablets within their restaurants to attract more customers, we believe the reason being is because the recent demands for computer tablets.
Although 16 plus desire tablets it was shown the majority of age’s 16-24 year olds still require laptops for educational purposes or for office workplaces.
So in one argument tablets can be classified as a source of entertainment device, but in another argument tablets can be just as good in office work situations for example a meeting or to quickly demonstrate a certain topic. Since the tablet is more compactable and mobile this would be the ideal computer tablet for these situations.

Expanding on my previous topic the research explains what the main function for the laptop; desktop-pc and tablet are used for. Research show that tablets a best suited for playing playing games, streaming movies and TV shows, checking and managing e-mails and social media. Where as laptops and desktop-pc aim more towards detailed features such as surfing the Internet and work-based purposes and creative purposes, with laptops and desktop-pc they have the capability for high usage software like adobe creative software, word document software and other important usages.

Amazon have devised a guideline system for customers who are looking to buy either a tablet or a laptop and unsure which to purchase.

We researched and found a website called ‘Which?’, it is a customer review website and we thought adding customer reviews and opinions into our report  would benefit greatly because of its essentialness to see the views of the customers, who at home already purchased these specific product reviews are rather crucial to the market industry as one review whether it be positive or negative could be the difference between the purchase of that one product.

“Users continue to move away from the traditional PC (notebooks and desktop-based) as it becomes more of a shared content creation tool, while the greater flexibility of tablets, hybrids and lighter notebooks address users increasingly different demands.” – Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

This quote shows the popularity of tablets will continue to rise within the next few years to come. The potential market is too great so as the tablet evolves to meet the demands of the consumers, sooner or later tablets will achieve the inevitable and overtime desktop-pc and laptops will no longer be needed.

“Complimentary smaller tablets will take over from the larger tablets form factors, providing the added mobility that consumers desire at a lower cost and will complete with hybrids for consumer attention.” - Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

Following on from this quote the theory evidentially shows and supports the first quote. As the demands for the tablet grows they will change, evolve and suite to each individual persons needs but as the meaning not only will the desktop-pc and laptops be out dated but also the founding tablets, but the upside to this is the variety of it will bring the fitting styles to each individual.

Worldwide device shipments by Segment

PC (laptops and desktops)

2012 – 341, 273 units
2013 – 299, 342 units
2014 – 277, 939 units
2015 – 268, 491 units

Tablets

2012 – 119, 529 units
2013 – 179, 531 units
2014 – 263, 450 units
2015 – 324, 565 units

This year (2014) the worldwide tablet market has grown 478 with lower average prices are attracting new users. Consumers continue to purchase tablets as an additional device that they can carry with them.  Gather conducted surveys in 2013 across Europe and Internationally states such as America and Japan and they discovered over two thirds of tablets were purchased and used outside the home of various activities.

But on the other hand the graphs shows a 7% decline for PC (laptops and desktop-based) from 2013. Gartner also conducted another survey for PC and it showed less than 8% would replace their PC with a tablet meaning they would buy a tablet as well as having a PC. But as we discovered earlier tablets will find a way to replace PC’s altogether by being able to do everything a PC can do but more.

So to conclude the future market for PC’s is uncertain as technology develops further and further into the future it is cloudy but one thing is for sure tablets are here to stay and surely evolve into a more productive and efficient technological product.

Cinema 4D lesson creating character

Following the tutorials given i created one half of my character. The steps were really precise and careful if i made one mistake then it would eventually cause a problem. But the basic shape of my character is really nice and i think perfect it really looks like my character i drew in 3D and i am so happy with it, i will get round to enhancing it to develop it further into a full character and then also rigging but i have learnt a lot from what Jay has shown me and i am a lot more confident in Cinema 4D now.

Interflora piece completed

Having finishing my main scenes i began to weave them together, i added other bits to make my animation flow and some sound i thought complimented my piece,
After many renders this was my final design, i changed quite a number of things to make it more snappy and grind down on the meanings i incorporated, but ofcourse with a piece like this there is so many things i could have improved on, some i did some i learnt how to and can include in later pieces i create. But overall i believe my piece was a huge success i spent the time on it and created something i am really happy with!
I also created this still image to go along side my animation. I did this to to meet all the reqiurements of the YCN brief that was asked, my animation was good but it couldnt be massively effective when trying to promote the Interflora logo on Billboards or items such as T-shirts or flyers. There is many hidden meanings in this image such as the bond between the Grandma and Grandson, the cheeky personality of the Grandson wearing the checkered flag but there is also a hidden metaphor for the Interflora Company to play on, 'Interflora will always come first' i get this meaning from, ofcourse the Grandma winning the race but also her promoting and representing Interflora.

After Effects lesson: Promoting course title

In this After Effects lesson i was given a couple facts about my course and had to represent them in an animation and make them stand out, i believe i nailed this piece i played on the idea and created a clock effect to show the 'Full Time' this worked well since it basically shows what it is, this little project was really fun to make and spontaneous so i had to think fast on how to show the statistics in a way everyone would notice.

Animating characters stage 5

The final scene was reinforcing the whole theme to Interflora, ofcourse it was central to them and the company and maybe the first set of scenes didnt make it so clear but with the live scene and this scene it made it alot clearer in my animation. The whole concept of my piece is to demonstrate two key themes which are the Interflora flowers and Grandparents day and why we should buy flowers i think with these scenes and ofcourse more added ideas to make my animation flow i can begin to bind these themes together into a strong statement.

Animating characters stage 4

This was my live scene in which i was recorded giving my nan flowers i had bought from the Interflora company, in doing so i found out a lot more about the company i was creating this piece for and how they run the company. It was amazing how fresh and vibrant the company is, making every set of flowers by hand and injecting their love into the products. I also did this scene to shoot over the message of my animation, showing our love and respect for our Grandparents, I believe without this scene my intentions of my whole animation would not have been as clear.

Animating characters stage 3

This stage was by far my favourite, i had my Grandma in a racing car and winning a race, The background was really tricky getting every component correct so it looks believable but the night sky was fun to create making the stars and the landscape, every piece made up a really nice magical scene, and the 'Granny Gone Wild' was just a clear hint who was behind the wheel!

Animating characters stage 2

My second scene was the boy catching the ball kicked by the Grandpa and this scene was set up nicely from the ending of my Grandpa scene. my ball came from the camera so it gave the image of the camera being the ball when changing scenes, i thought this to be rather a subtle transation. My boy had a lot more action since i had to make him jump up to catch the ball then land again but my biggest worry was how i was going to make it flow into my next scene and i experimented and came aross the idea of having smoke carry my charcters off into the next scene, it was smooth and quite nicely done the effect i got was great since i made the smoke travel up my boy and you was able to see his body disappear before his head.

i had to create the background for both of my football scenes as one, i created a contrast of colours which worked in harmony with eachother for a calm environment which wouldnt take the focus off my characters but worked well with them, i also animated each cloud and the opacity and size of them so some looked closer than others, i think it worked nicely.

Animating characters stage 1

First scene was difficult. I didnt know how it would turn out or if it would turn out how i wanted it but i put all the components together and it took me a while but i made my Grandpa animate, I think the way i did it was good less action as possible but still effective and got to the point. My Grandpa kicks the ball towards the camera to change into my next scene of the boy catching the ball, i did this so the camera doesnt have to rotate it can be still but will still gain the effect i wanted.

YCN character development #2

My next step was importing all my characters into photoshop to bring them to life, i was not just adding colour but also putting each part of the body into seperate layers so when i place them into After Effects each part of the body will move seperatly i work hard on each one to make them feel alive and to add character to each, i think the colour of each one really works. I also added more background textures and more accessories for example the ball and the t.v and also the background for the football scene.

YCN character development

Once i was happy with my drawings i scanned them in and experimented with how i could define the edges, i tried Photoshop and Illustrator and i preferred to use illustrator to created the outline for my characters, i also created a goal net for the football scene.

YCN character creation

The idea i came up with i thought was decent so i began creating the characters, i decided on making 4 scenes, football scene. With the grandad and the grandson. Videogame scene, again with the grandad and grandson, Racing car scene with the grandma and finally the karaoke scene with both the grandad and grandma, here are the characters i created for each scene.

YCN project idea development #2

Now that i had picked my brief, and had a vague idea of what it was i wanted to do i started thinking of ideas, my first idea was to visit a elderly home and have somebody film me interacting with the elderly and doing various activities like play chess or other board games just to show that they may be old but can still be fun, although i hit a massive wall with that idea since all the elderly homes i visited or spoke to on the phone would not allow me to film for many reasons, though this took up some time i had to rethink what i was going to do.
Here i had a brainstorm of what to do, i realised i should create my own cartoons of grandparents doing activities instead of filming them, so i planned out various acivities i could make my cartoons do such as play football with the grandchildren or play videogames with the grandchildren, and activity to make it look as though my point is coming across
Having got some activites that i thought would work good i notted down what i would need for them e.g if i was having grandma in a racing car i would need to create the racing car and the road and so on.
i was then planning out some other features for example i wanted to reinforce my point i was getting across so i thought up some quotes i could include in my animation just to give the audience a better understanding of what was happening.

YCN project idea development

This brief was a live brief i had a choice from the YCN website to pick a brief of my liking and i chose the Grandparents day for a flower company, Interflora.
The brief explained to create a animation, or a logo to support grandparents day for their company. My general idea was two aspects, show grandparents are just as active as young tennagers and also how they have been there for us our whole life. To get them two ideas and bind them within the interflora company.

Here i created 2 moodboards just to show a visual example of my idea.

Cinema 4D character creation

Typography lesson 2

In my second lesson i took the meaning and created each of my letters on one A5 sheet of paper. I thought smartly how to have my letters, therefore i created them in rope to reinforce the idea of holding on and it worked perfectly.

Typography lesson 1

In this Typography lesson i had to come up with a 16 letter meaning and create it in various types. After a long think i thought of a nice meaning that also had an acrostical meaning 'Hold On Pain Ends'. A really nice creation and i arranged it so it also spelt HOPE horizontally.

Here i experimented with various types to create my meaning.
